Taylormark Data Recovery Q&A
Q: How did this happen?
A: The unfortunate reality is that every hard drive will eventually fail, and often that failure can happen without symptoms or warning.
Q: How much does data recovery cost?
A: The cost is a factor of the type of failure and the effort expended to recover your data. The majority of successful recoveries price in the range of $360 - $760. In many cases our complete service will total less than 50% of the price of other data recovery providers.
Q: Can data recovery cost more than $760?
A: Yes. The cost of data recovery can be higher when rush service is requested, parts replacement is needed, or excessive manual intervention is required to process your data recovery.
Q: Can data recovery cost less than $360?
A: Yes. The cost can be less if minimal effort is required or the failure to access your data is not hard drive related.
Q: How long will it take to recover my data?
A: Most recoveries are complete within 3 business days. That timeframe is not a guarantee but is our typical recovery turnaround.
Q: When will you call me with status updates?
A: We will contact you daily with updates of our progress. If you wish to check on your recovery status, please call anytime.
Q: If I have a deadline, can you get me my data faster?
A: Possibly. Our rush service will have the recovery process started immediately to ensure the quickest possible turnaround.
Q: Can you guarantee that my data will be recovered?
A: No. We will do our best, but the outcome of our efforts to recover your data cannot be predetermined or guaranteed. Some types of drive failures prevent the possibility of data retrieval. Imagine for a moment that your hard drive is like a small hand written journal. If that journal was ripped into pieces and one could collect every torn page, the journal could be reconstructed. Now if you were to take that journal and grind it into dust with a kitchen blender, regardless of effort the journal could never be reconstructed.
Q: What if I am unsure whether data recovery is worth the cost?
A: Data recovery is a service of last resort and can be very costly. We strongly suggest that you make absolutely sure that the data needing recovery is not in some other location. If you find yourself “on the fence” regarding whether the data is worth the cost, please take the time necessary to be confident in your decision.
Q: Am I responsible for any charges if you are unsuccessful?
A: An evaluation charge of $120 will be due if your data is unrecoverable. Other charges may apply for parts replacement or shipping.
Q: What does the cost of data recovery service include?
A: Disassembly of your computer or external hard drive to extract the failed hard drive. The labor to replace the failed hard drive if you choose to pay for the cost of a replacement hard drive. Moving a copy of your recovered data to your new computer, repaired computer, or additional storage that you supply.
Q: What does a successful recovery look like?
A: An Intact Recovery returns a complete and exact copy of your data. You will be able to get back to using your data without issue.
A Mixed Recovery returns intact structured data and files sorted by type. If your user account is in the intact outcome of your recovery you will be able to get back to using your data with minimal effort. The extracted files from the damaged areas of your drive will be returned in folders sorted by file type.
A Bulk Recovery returns only files in folders sorted by file type. Your pictures contained in an images folder, music files in a music folder, text documents in a documents folder and so on. While bulk recoveries can be tedious to sift through, programs like iTunes and iPhoto can be directed to re-import their respective files from a bulk recovery in just a few clicks.
Q: Is my computer/ hard drive manufacturer responsible for the cost of data recovery?
A: No. If you are still covered under warranty they will likely only replace defective hardware. They assume you know the risks and have a backup of your important data.
Q: What does it mean if my hard drive requires parts replacement service?
A: In some cases the physical nature of a drive failure will cause damage to delicate parts inside the drive. These parts must be repaired before the data recovery process can begin. In most cases parts replacement service is forwarded to our lab service partner. Data recovery that requires parts replacement will likely cost more and require additional time to complete.
Q: Will replacing my hard drive fix my computer?
A: Yes, if the hard drive was the only problem with your computer. No, if there were other problems that caused the need for data recovery or were present at the time your hard drive failed. Many customers choose to mitigate that risk with a new computer.
Q: Do I need to reinstall my software?
A: It is possible that you may need to reinstall your software. In most cases your applications will work following an intact recovery, but to be certain your programs perform properly it is recommended that you reinstall them.
Q: If my programs need to be reinstalled, is that service included?
A: No. Reinstallation of your software if it is needed will be your responsibility unless you request Taylormark to perform that service. You will need to supply the installer media and licensing information for all software needing reinstallation. The time required to reinstall your software will be added to your recovery cost.
Q: Do I need to bring in an additional hard drive for my recovered files?
A: You are welcome to bring an additional drive for your recovered files, but if your computer is under warranty you may not need to.
If your failed drive is in a computer that is under warranty we will secure your recovered files on our storage until you return with your repaired computer. At that time your recovered files will be copied to your repaired computer.
If your failed drive is in a computer that is no longer covered under warranty you will need to decide whether you would like to replace your computer or have the failed hard drive replaced. If you intend to have your failed hard drive replaced, you may supply the replacement drive or engage Taylormark to procure a replacement drive. Your recovered files will be copied to your repaired computer.
If data recovery service was for an external hard drive, you are welcome to supply the additional external hard drive needed to copy the recovered files or you may engage Taylormark to procure an external hard drive for your recovered files.
Q: What if I am replacing my old computer with a new computer?
A: If you decide to purchase a new computer, we will gladly copy the recovered files to your new computer.
Q: What should I do with my old computer if I choose to replace it?
A: We will gladly recycle your old computer and in some cases grant a trade in credit up to $150 towards your recovery cost.
Q: Can you pick up or deliver my computer or hard drive?
A: Yes. Additional fees will be applied for pick up and delivery service.
Q: Can I have additional backup copies of my recovery?
A: Yes. Additional fees will be applied for multiple copies or destinations.
Q: How do I prevent this from happening in the future?
A: Have a working backup in place. If you don’t know where to start, schedule an appointment so Taylormark can configure a backup solution in your home or office to assure you have a contingency plan for data loss in the future.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: We accept Cash, Checks, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
